10th-12th March 2014: Health Camp for slum dwellers
“Health is the condition of wisdom, and the sign is cheerfulness – an open and noble temper” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
The slum population in India has a very inadequate system of healthcare and a very poor screening of diseases with high incidence of diseases like malaria, hypertension and malnutrition. Moreover, there’s lack of awareness about health and hygiene. Therefore to assess the current health status of the dwellers in these slums, AMSA India organized this event.
A team of 11 volunteers, members of AMSA India diligently assessed the health status of 96 slum dwellers (from Valmiki Basti and Badli slums) over a period of 3 days (10th- 12th March, 2014)
The health checkup comprised of:
The results showed an alarmingly large number of people having raised blood pressure, and many complained of frequent headaches and chest pain on slight exertion.
The AMSA India volunteers assisted the people, each moved at the courage and positivity expressed by all the students present. Musings of volunteers kept everyone in splits during the otherwise tedious task of health checkups.
After the checkups, the residents of the area were educated on leading a healthier lifestyle with instructions on adequate diet, moderate exercise and the harmful effects of the common prevalent practices like smoking and alcohol consumption.
They were also advised to go for regular health checkups in the OPD at the nearby Lok Nayak Hospital. We hope that our efforts and the education of the risk factors of various diseases to the masses would’ve inspired them to take better care of themselves in the future and get themselves treated at the right time to avoid later complications.
In this way we also strived to achieve our goal of Action- giving back to the community through community work.

8th March 2014: On International Women's Day, highlighting Cervical and Breast Cancer
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference” -Winston Churchill
Breast and Cervical cancer are not just diseases that strike at women. They strike at the very heart of who they are as women: how others perceive them, how they perceive themselves, how they live, work and raise their families, or whether they do these things at all. For a woman to lose a breast is more than just a physical affliction. It rocks at the very seat of her womanhood and can be totally devastating.
Breast and Cervical cancer can occur to any woman of reproducible age. With the modern era lifestyle and environmental conditions with chemicals and toxins in and around our body systems, women are at greater risk of developing cancer.
Cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of cancer death for women in the World. However, in the past 40 years, the number of cases of cervical cancer and the number of deaths from cervical cancer have decreased significantly. Although India being a developing nation, the morbidity related to Cervical Cancer in women is much higher than other forms of cancer.
If the statistics are compared to Breast Cancer, it is estimated that one in eight women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. It is the cancer causing largest number of deaths in women only after lung cancer. If breast cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is markedly improved. But as is said, 'prevention is better than cure’, simple precautionary measures and regular checkups can help to bring down the statistics of breast cancer incidence and mortality.
AMSA India always strives to be at the forefront of increasing awareness about the social and health related issues concerning the masses nationally and internationally. It is a federation that aspires to offers the future physicians a comprehensive introduction to global health issues. In this pursuit, on 8th March, 2014 on the occasion of International Women's Day, AMSA India collaborated with Nulife Hospital, Delhi to organize an awareness campaign on 'Cervical Cancer' and 'Breast Cancer'.
The event was conducted at The International Women's Hostel, North Campus, Delhi University, Delhi. About 150 students participated. It included a seminar on 'Cervical Cancer and its Prevention' and 'Breast Cancer and its Prevention' by eminent gynecologists- by Dr. Shakuntla Kumar & Dr. Tarini Taneja. It covered aspects like incidence and prevalence of HPV infection in India, where the audience was educated about getting a pap smear done regularly for early detection and the importance of eating healthy and good hygiene habits in prevention of cervical cancer.
The second lecture focused on Breast cancer and Breast Self-Examination (BSE) for its detection.
The seminar was followed by an interactive session in which the doubts and queries of the audience regarding the topic were clarified.
Volunteers for AMSA India participated and helped organize the event and distributed pamphlets to spread awareness among the masses. Everyone was made to wear a teal-colored and pink-colored ribbon signifying Cervical cancer and Breast Cancer prevention.
Breast and Cervical cancer awareness have been gaining momentum recently and through the efforts of several international organizations and events like this seminar breast cancer incidence have shown recent decline. Though it is very encouraging but the statistical improvement against overall occurrence is just a drop in the ocean.
Self-examination of the breast, regular check-ups, mammography, and positive changes in lifestyle are some of the measures women take to fight breast cancer.
Cervical cancer, on the other hand, has shown significant decline . This decline largely is the result of many women getting regular Pap tests, which can find cervical pre-cancer before it turns into cancer. Also, the vaccine against it is easily available and widely used now.
In a nutshell, main aim of the event was to emphasize on ways to prevent cancer of Breast and Cervix, so that women at large can be liberated from the shackles of these health disorders and have a healthier, happier and better life.
It also helped achieve our goal of KNOWLEDGE- lectures on the topic,
ACTION- increasing awareness of the masses and
FRIENDSHIP- the students from medical colleges of Delhi came together and interacted and made friends with other non- medical colleges of Delhi University.
‘I strive so that little girls will grow up in a world where pink ribbons are for ponytails and party dresses…’

"Be the change you want to see" -Mahatma Gandhi
AMSA India always strives to be at the fore front of increasing awareness about the social health related issues concerning the masses nationwide with KNOWLEDGE, ACTION & FRIENDSHIP being its three most basic goals.
AMSA India dynamically combines the knowledge of nurturing doctors by organizing health awareness programs which not only provide first-hand information about health topics but also an opportunity for young medical professionals to interact outside the medical world.
AMSA India, West Bengal Chapter held a "Health Awareness" event at Ekta Heights Residential Complex, Kolkata on 23rd February 2014. The program aimed at spreading preventing measures of following CHRONIC DISEAES among general public-
1. Alcoholic Liver Disease
2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD)
3. Lung Cancer
Various aspects including the pathogenesis and risk factors of these diseases were covered. The above topics were covered as the audience was supposed to comprise mainly of upper middle class where smoking and drinking are common practices.
Speakers for event included AMSA India members:-
The event was followed by a question-answer session in which people from non-medical background freely asked questions and interacted actively. One of the persons from audience said -"Doctors be good communicators only then can diseases be prevented at large scale", which was quite inspiring.
The event turned out to be a great success and AMSA India once again held up its goals of KNOWLEDGE and ACTION. Such events can enable young and sprouting doctors to rise beyond the stereotyped view of doctors among as people having stethoscope around their neck, examining patients and giving medicines to them and help them to use their knowledge for greater good of the society.

“Monetary motivations cannot explain the ebullience of
students performing their first dissection, nor their sustained
alacrity through inhumane hours of clinical practice. Material

there are manifold easier ways to accrue income.
